Family Life

Students in grades 5 through 8 will participate in Family Life classes. This complies with Tennessee Code Annotated 49-6-1301-1307, which mandates that our school system implement a program of Family Life instruction for students. We have endeavored to make this an age-appropriate instructional program following our school board abstinence-only policy while meeting Tennessee's standards. The Monroe County Health Department Health educator, Mrs Jackie Harris, teaches Family Life classes.

The list of topics covered for grades 5 through 8 are listed below. However, if parents wish to review the curriculum we welcome you to do so at the School Health Office (3459 New Highway 68 Madisonville) on Thursday, October 6th, from 1:30-4:00 pm or by appointment. We are happy to stay for later appointments, if needed.

All students will participate in these classes unless a parent/guardian requests to exempt his or her son/daughter in writing. Students may be exempt from the Family Life unit according to T.C.A. 49-6-1305: "A parent or guardian who wishes to excuse a student from family life shall submit a request, in writing, to the school counselor. A student who is excused from family life shall not be penalized for grading purposes if the student satisfactorily performs alternative health lessons."

Parents that wish to exempt their student after reviewing the Family Life curriculum and materials in our office, must notify your student's guidance counselor by October 7th, 2022  with the completed form below. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Lacey Mason, Monroe County Schools Coordinated School Health Director, at [email protected] or 423-420-9678 or Jackie Harris, Monroe County Health Department Health Educator, at [email protected] 423-442-3993. We welcome your questions or appointment.
