Monroe Made: Larry Lay

Larry Lay, 1981 Madisonville High School Graduate

Larry Lay is a proud graduate of Madisonville High School, Class of 1981, and a shining example of what it means to be Monroe Made.

Today, Larry is a self-employed farmer, growing soybeans, corn, and wheat, while also managing a cow-calf herd. In addition, he is the owner of East Tennessee Feed and Seed, continuing a lifelong commitment to agriculture and serving his community through hard work and dedication.

When asked what his Monroe County education means to him, Larry shares that it means a great deal. Although he did not attend college, he credits his success to the strong foundation he received in Monroe County Schools. The vocational opportunities available during high school played a critical role in shaping his career and remain a key factor in his success today.

Larry fondly remembers Mr. Wimp Jones, who taught him invaluable lessons about agriculture, but he also gives special credit to Mr. Johnny McDaniel, his guidance counselor. When Larry’s grades slipped, Mr. McDaniel stepped in and pushed him to do better. Larry believes that without that support, he may not have graduated.

Larry is proud that he can make a living doing what he loves and doing it side by side with his family on their farm and in their business.

Larry’s story is living proof that success doesn’t require a college degree. With a strong high school education, vocational training, determination, and passion, you can build a fulfilling and successful life.

Larry Lay is truly Monroe Made, rooted in hard work, guided by community, and growing a successful future from the education and values he gained right here in Monroe County Schools.
