Talent Search
The Talent Search program is a federal grant designed to identify qualified youths with potential for education at the postsecondary level and encourage them to complete secondary school and undertake a program of postsecondary education; while publicizing the availability of, and facilitate the application for, student financial assistance for persons who seek to pursue postsecondary education; and encouraging them to enter and complete post-secondary education.
The Monroe County School Talent Search program is one of a few nationwide housed in a local board of education. We serve 13 schools in Loudon and Monroe County. Students are eligible to join Talent Search if they are
- at least in 6th grade;
- a United States Citizens or Legal Permanent Resident; and
- desires to enroll in post-secondary education.
Talent Search provides career exploration, aptitude assessments, information on postsecondary institutions; education or counseling services designed to improve the financial and economic literacy of students; entry into postsecondary education; and connections to resources to assist in post-secondary education.
Services provided by the program include:
- Academic, financial, career, or personal counseling including advice on entry to postsecondary programs
- Career exploration and aptitude assessments
- Information on postsecondary education
- Exposure to college campuses
- Information on student financial assistance
- Assistance in completing college admissions and financial aid applications
- Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams
- Special activities for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders
- Workshops for the families of participants
