Monroe Made: Terry Frerichs
Terry Frerichs- Monroe Made
After talking with Terry Frerichs on the phone, we knew he was the perfect person to honor with a Monroe Made article.
Terry Frerichs is a proud graduate of Tellico Plains High School’s Class of 1978 and represents the heart and heritage of Monroe County. Today, he continues a family legacy as a partner at Frerichs Sawmill, a business that has served the community for more than seven decades.
For Terry, his Monroe County education holds deep meaning. “It has tremendous value from relationships with teachers and fellow students,” he shares. “They offered me support to better myself as an individual and in business.” Those early connections helped shape not only his character but also his approach to work and community.
When reflecting on his school years, Terry recalls many meaningful experiences, but one person in particular stands out. “Lots of good memories, but Coach Mike Cole is the one who comes to mind as the biggest influence on me.” The impact of strong mentors like Coach Cole continues to resonate in Terry’s life today.
Frerichs Sawmill is more than just a business; it is a cornerstone of the community. Established in 1953 by Terry’s father, Wayford Frerichs, the mill has remained family-owned and operated ever since. Located in Coker Creek, the sawmill handles every step of the process, from purchasing and logging timber to sawing and finishing the final product. This full-circle operation reflects both craftsmanship and commitment, making it a source of pride for the entire Monroe County community.
Among his many accomplishments, Terry is especially proud of the local impact of his work. “Seeing most of our products being used locally in Monroe County” stands as a testament to the mill’s role in building and sustaining the community it serves.
Through hard work and strong values, Terry Frerichs truly embodies what it means to be Monroe Made.
