Monoe Made: Charlie Hall

Some people are remembered for what they accomplished. Others are remembered for how they made people feel. Charlie Hall is one of those rare people who will always be remembered for both.
A proud graduate of Vonore High School's Class of 1961, Charlie spent his entire career serving the community as the owner of Hall's Grocery, a place that was far more than just a grocery store. It was where neighbors caught up on local news, shared stories, celebrated life's milestones, and knew they would always be greeted with a smile. Charlie jokes that he served on the store's "entertainment committee," but anyone who knows him understands there is a lot of truth behind that statement.
Charlie's roots run deep in Monroe County. He began his education in the three-room Lakeside School before attending Vonore High School. "I'd say my education was just as good as anybody else's," Charlie says. "I went to grammar school in a three-room school called Lakeside and then Vonore High School for high school." Charlie's school days were filled with hard work and unforgettable memories. Each morning, he and his best friend, Richie Kirkland, walked to Lakeside School. Before classes began, the boys earned ten cents by arriving early to light the wood stoves that heated the classrooms.
Those early teachers left a lasting impression. Charlie remembers Grace Dotson as someone who demanded excellence from every student. "She wasn't easy, but she tried to make you learn," he recalls. "She made you get with it and pushed everyone to be the best they could be." At Vonore High School, Coach Gordon Sparks became much more than a football coach. "He became one of my best friends and made an impact on me," Charlie says.
During his teenage summers, Charlie worked alongside his father on the family's rolling grocery store, delivering food to families throughout the mountains and back roads of Monroe County. Those experiences planted the seeds for a lifetime in the grocery business.
When asked what professional accomplishment makes him most proud, his answer is simple. "Being in the grocery business my whole life. I just loved it." When the conversation turned to family, Charlie beamed, "I'm proud of my family, my children, and my grandkids," he said with a grin. "I should have had my grandkids first."
Even Charlie's football career comes with a smile. Playing right end at Vonore High School, he proudly claims one school record that may never be broken. “I was thrown the ball twice, and I caught it twice," he laughs. "I had a 100% touchdown catch percentage."
It's exactly the kind of story that makes Charlie Hall...Charlie Hall.
His life has never been about seeking recognition. Instead, it has been about serving others, building relationships, and making every person who walked through the doors of Hall's Grocery feel like family. In a world that often moves too fast, Charlie reminds us that the best part of any day is taking time to just sit and visit with people.
His story proves that success isn't measured by what you build, but by the lives you touch along the way. Charlie Hall is a man of integrity and a local treasure. We are honored to call him Monroe Made.
