Monroe Made: Brad West

Brad West, a proud graduate of Sequoyah High School’s Class of 2006, has taken the values and work ethic he learned in Monroe County and turned them into global success. As the Co-Founder of Xul Beer Company, Brad has helped build one of the most recognized craft beer brands in the industry, proving that big dreams can begin in a small town.

Growing up in Monroe County left a lasting impact on Brad’s life. Reflecting on his journey, he shared, “I’m incredibly grateful for the time I spent growing up in Monroe County. Growing up in a small town taught me that you can dream big while still staying connected to your roots.” From his days at Vonore Elementary to competing in sports at Vonore and Sequoyah, Brad says the people of Monroe County played a major role in shaping who he is today.

Brad credits many educators and mentors for helping guide him along the way. “I had the privilege of learning from several incredible teachers and coaches throughout the years,” he said. He specifically recognized Maurice Moser, Penelope Fowler, and Gary Cole for their influence on his life. “Mr. Cole’s classes were always engaging and fun, while Mrs. Fowler’s were challenging and demanding, but always led with the kindest heart and genuine care for her students. Mr. Moser was the epitome of class and integrity, and someone I’ll always look at as not only a great principal, but also a great human being and friend.”

Before becoming a successful entrepreneur, Brad worked local jobs at Bert’s and Mason’s Furniture and later attended the University of Tennessee. Those early experiences helped build the foundation for the success he enjoys today. What began as a small local brewery has grown into a globally recognized company with distribution in China, Japan, countries throughout Europe, and soon Australia.

“I’m most proud of the brand that my business partners and I have built in just five short years,” Brad shared. He emphasized, “None of it would be possible without our incredible team, whose passion and dedication have helped shape what Xul is today.”

Although his career has taken him around the world, Brad says Monroe County will always hold a special place in his heart. “No matter where life takes me, Monroe County will always be home.”

Brad West’s story is a reminder that Monroe County students can achieve extraordinary things while staying grounded in the community that helped shape them. Through appreciation for his roots Brad continues to represent what it means to be Monroe Made.
