Monroe Made: Bethany Powers
Bethany (Hunt) Powers proudly calls Madisonville, Tennessee, her hometown. With deep family roots in Monroe County, she credits her supportive family and the close-knit community for shaping who she is today. A graduate of Sequoyah High School’s Class of 2011, Bethany now serves as an Assistant Professor and Program Director in the Doctor of Education Program at Lincoln Memorial University, where she helps prepare future leaders in education.
Growing up in Monroe County meant that school was about more than academics; it was about relationships and belonging. Bethany shared that school did not always come easily for her. However, she was fortunate to have teachers who recognized her potential and encouraged her along the way. “They nurtured my confidence and helped me develop a strong sense of belonging as a student,” Bethany said.
Some of her favorite memories came from working in the school office during middle and high school. She enjoyed interacting with students, teachers, and community members and valued the trust the office staff placed in her. Bethany also credits her time in cheerleading with teaching her the power of encouragement and teamwork, lessons that have stayed with her well beyond her school years.
Before earning her doctoral degree, Bethany served as an elementary teacher and behavior coach in Knox County Schools. During that time, she developed a passion for supporting students’ social and emotional development. Today, she brings that knowledge to Lincoln Memorial University, where she works with educators pursuing doctoral degrees.
While Bethany is proud of her professional journey, she says her greatest source of pride is her family. She lives in Knoxville, Tennessee, with her husband, son, and daughter.
A quote that inspires her work as an educator is: “One good teacher can change the way a student walks into every room for the rest of their life.” Bethany strives to be that teacher each day. She believes that raising and educating children is one of the most important responsibilities we share. “Every child deserves someone who believes in them,” she said. “Someone who reminds them they are loved, who sees their potential beyond their mistakes, and who teaches them that kindness toward others is the foundation of a better world.”
Bethany Powers is a shining example of how strong roots, supportive educators, and a caring community can shape a life of purpose. She is proof that once you are Monroe Made, those lessons stay with you wherever you go.
