Monroe Made: Allan Benton
For Allan Benton, Monroe County isn’t just where he went to school; it is home. A proud graduate of Madisonville High School’s Class of 1965, Benton carries with him not only the lessons he learned in the classroom but also the friendships and memories that helped shape his life’s journey.
When asked what his Monroe County education means to him, Benton reflects simply: “Lots of good memories and friendships.” Those early years in Madisonville laid the foundation for a lifetime of hard work and community connection. The relationships he built during his school days remain a meaningful part of his story.
One teacher who made a lasting impression was Gussie Ghormley. “She was an incredible teacher and brought great enthusiasm to the classroom,” Benton recalls. Her passion for teaching and ability to engage students left a mark that endured long after graduation. We have a feeling that if Miss Ghormley could see Allan Benton now; she would be very impressed with her student.
After graduating, Benton went on to build a name known far beyond East Tennessee. As the owner of Benton’s Smoky Mountain Country Hams, he has earned national recognition for his dedication to traditional curing methods and uncompromising quality. What began as a small-town endeavor grew into a celebrated business, respected by chefs and food lovers across the country. Yet despite his widespread success, Benton remains firmly rooted in the values and work ethic instilled during his Monroe County school days.
While his professional accomplishments are significant, Benton is most proud of something closer to home: “Raising three fine children.” For him, family stands as his greatest achievement, a reflection of the character that defines both his personal and professional life.
Allan Benton’s story reflects the heart of our community. Monroe County Schools is proud to call him one of our own, a true example of what it means to be Monroe Made.
