Library Media Specialist: Cindy Hughes
Madisonville Intermediate School's library is staffed by one highly qualified library media specialist. The library serves approximately 600 students for 35 minutes per class each week. Our entire library is computerized so items can be accessed through our school-based OPAC, online public access catalog, by keyword, title, author, or subject. We have an Accelerated Reader program that is networked throughout the entire school. The program encourages students to read more books. Every time a student reads an AR book they can take a test on the book and earn points to be traded in for prizes. We also give away a bicycle at the end of the year to a boy and girl from each grade level as an AR prize. Each time a student makes 100% on a quiz, their name is recorded on a slip of paper which is placed in a box at the end of the year for the bicycle drawing. The more times a student makes 100%, the greater his or her chances for winning a bicycle! We also recognize students who earn 100 points-medallion, 200 points-small trophy, & 300 points-large trophy presented at the end-of-year awards ceremonies. The school furnishes the prizes for the children.
Ms. Hughes is our Library Media Specialist and has lived in Madisonville since she was born. She is the mother of 3 grown children, Tyler, Haley, and Heather, and is proud to say that her family will be growing soon! Ms. Hughes recently became engaged to a wonderful man, Steve Duncan, and following a wedding on June 2, 2012, will have a new stepson, Lee, a new daughter-in-law, Beth, and a step-grandson, Colton.
Ms. Hughes began teaching in 1998 after earning a bachelors degree at Tennessee Wesleyan College and obtaining a teaching license in grades K-8th. She taught 2nd and 3rd grade at Vonore Elementary and 8th grade math and science at Madisonville Middle School beginning in 1998 then took over as the librarian at MMS in 1999. She earned a masters degree in information science and certification as a PreK-12 library media specialist in 2002 from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Ms. Hughes transferred from the middle school to MIS in 2003 and loves being part of the wonderful staff at the school. Her hobbies are hunting, fishing, hiking, hang gliding, bike riding, swimming, working with computers, designing web sites, caring for and playing with her 3 dogs and cat, and reading.
