Monroe County Schools Transition Fair
The 3rd annual Monroe County Transition Fair was held at Hiwassee College on March 23, 2012. The fair assists our students with preparing to make the transition from high school to post-secondary schools, services, or employment. It is a great opportunity for our students to explore post-secondary options they might not have otherwise considered. By bringing schools and businesses together in one setting, the students are able to explore numerous options and gather information to assist them in making decisions for their future. It gives them the resources to begin thinking about what direction to take and goals to pursue after graduation.
Approximately 40 businesses and colleges attended the fair along with 150 students and parents from Sequoyah, Sweetwater, and Tellico Plains High Schools. The attendees included military branches, post-secondary schools, and several businesses that provide employment or transition services for our students. Post-secondary schools in attendance included universities, community colleges, technical, and certification schools. Some of the businesses in attendance employ a large number of individuals in the county and can be an important connection for our students to make. Other businesses in attendance provide specialized services to our special needs students who are transitioning into adulthood.
With the Monroe County Transition Fair, we hope to increase awareness and enrollment in post-secondary college, career programs, and transition services after high school graduation. We were pleased with student feedback and look forward to next year’s 4th annual Transition Fair.

TAG and Sheriff’s Office Get Together to Solve Crime at MIS
The Madisonville Intermediate School Talented and Gifted Students (Lucy Cournoyer, Kelly Swabe, Jacob Keener, Cody Sims, Abbey Graves, Lydia Haymes, and Macy Moses) became Crime Scene Investigators for their educational and enrichment project. The students learned how to take and read fingerprints, study crime scene settings, do microscopic lab work, study the art of interviewing suspects and working with law enforcement. The mock scene crime was created by their instructor Candra Cox. The time line for the investigation started with the finding of the victim (Shelia Woodby) in the library, with MIS Coroner, Brooke Torbett, pronouncing her demise.
The CSI Photographer (Cindy Hughes) and acting Judge Pamela Barker worked closely with the team taking pictures and signing warrants.
All findings linked Mary Frank (MIS Secretary) as the prime suspect and she was taken into custody by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Officer Chase Nipper.
